Color plays an integral role in your personal brand of style. It also impacts how you feel.
If you look at my own evolution of style, you can see a theme:
In fact, even my first car was this color of bright blue (called Galactic Blue by VW).
It makes me HAPPY. It IS me.
This is the power that color (and your style) has – to communicate a bit of your personality before you have to even say a word.
So, I want to share with you some easy ways to incorporate color into your wardrobe.
Full disclosure: I was more creative with my wardrobe in the accounting side of Corporate Fashion than I was when in the merchandising side of it.
When I was a merchandiser, much of my wardrobe was neutral: beige, white, black or gray.
This was as much a result of what was available for me to buy at a significant discount (most of our deliveries were these colors with just POPs of color) as it was so easy it was to get dressed with this simplified color palette.
Fast forward a few years and I’m constantly on the hunt for COLOR.
Fashion designers and buyers inherently play it safe with this neutral palette and POPs of color because it’s easier for most people to buy.
To be fair, hitting the nail on the head with best seller colors is much more difficult than having a best seller in a neutral. And, you do need neutrals in your closet for a balanced wardrobe (the staples).
But you have to have FUN and personality with your wardrobe and style. Which is why I’m always looking for COLOR for myself as well as our clients.
At least we can always add a POP with accessories or accents.
A few easy ways to add color if you have an otherwise neutral outfit or wardrobe:
- Your favorite scarf
- A statement necklace or pair of earrings
- Colorful denim with everything else super neutral
- Fabulously fun shoes
- A slim belt (either through the loops or at your waist, depending)
On the flip side, if you have a dress or outfit in a statement color, keep your accessories neutral (most of the time – there are always exceptions to the rule).
PS. This is a GREAT way to get started and/or out the door quickly and easily. It’s also how I always dress for travel – keep it simple, add a pop!
PPS. If you’re in LA, I have the perfect opportunity to add some colors via accessories! Join me at Alexis Bittar (one of my favorites) on July 22nd at their 3rd Street store (details and RSVP here) and you’ll have the chance for me personally to help you find your perfect pops of color and personality to your style.
